Why is that necessary for city to have 4 major sports to be considered a legitimate as a city? I mean really since when did this become a factor so important? And why 4 and not 10? And if a city has 2 it's as if it's not measuring up.

10? There are only 4 major sports in America. Most people don't count MLS, not yet. I don't think a city has to have 4 major sports to be considered legitimate, but it is definitely impressive if they do. Take Minneapolis/St. Paul for example, they have all 4 and that's rare for the size of their cities.

I think most cities only have 2 or 3 of the 4.

It is just one of the endless ways to compare cities. I think the idea that a city must have all four to be legitimate is silly. Los Angeles didn't have an NFL team but is certainly a legitimate.

What is the 4th sport if people don't count MLS..? I guess if you live up north you might make a claim for the NHL.

NHL is huge in America. While not as popular as football, basketball, and baseball, it is undoubtedly the 4th sport in the USA. It's huge even in Florida and California.

It is not even close, the NHL is the 4th.
For example the Stanley Cup Playoffs (4-7 games) would draw a TV audience 9-12x (6-9mil) greater for each game than the 1 game MLS cup (700k).
Another example the Boston Bruins have 900K followers in Twitter, the NE Revolution have 67K, for Comparison the Providence Bruins (AHL) and the Pawtucket Red Sox (MiLB) have 32-33K followers.
So the Bruins are much, much larger in the market than the Revs. The Providence B's are a more equal to the Revs than the Boston Bruins are to the Revs
People who equate the MLS to the NHL in 2016 are crazy or ignorant.

I think it is an inferiority complex that Dallas has an NHL team but Houston does not

Why is it necessary for people to have 3500 sq ft of living area for a 4 member family? Its just another arcane measure of modern excess.

It will be a long time before any league challenges the NHL for #4, probably never.
Soccer need to defend its market share against Lacrosse, which at least in the Northeast seem to be on roughly equal footing.
