Bend COL is very high, however. If a family has 2 salaries and one is a teacher, that's probably manageable. Supporting a family there on just a teacher's salary?

Ehhh....

For the sake of argument, Bend is about 25% higher COL than the national average; Phoenix is a bit less than average. The median home price in Bend is $340,000.

The OP doesn't say if s/he is working as well, and it's also unclear where in AZ they live. If they live in Scottsdale, Bend will look affordable by comparison. Pretty much anywhere else, and Bend is going to look significantly more expensive.

OP is probably looking for a place with more stable weather across all seasons. Places in the Pacific Northwest would fit the bill well.

I would recommend areas in the Carolinas. Suburbs of Greenville-Spartanburg SC, Charlotte NC (includes suburbs in NC and SC) or the Greensboro/Winston-Salem NC area offer affordable safe places to live, moderate weather with four seasons along with rare natural disasters and good opportunities for work.

Lots of homes available in the Bend area around $200k. And a house is an investment, not really a cost.

Teachers can expect to earn $15 000 more per year in Bend, Oregon than in Arizona and $20-25 000 more in Santa Fe, New Mexico. That's real money.

As for financing per this list, only 14 states promulgate above average investments in their educational systems? wth...

I live in Phoenix and I 100% disagree unless you are talking about up north.
