San Jose has a population of more than a million people, has a larger population than all but 3 cities in this poll, and is the largest city in one of the largest metros in the US. Seems pretty major to me.

Ok, I am from Chicago, and while it is VERY clean....Boston easily wins this. I think Chicago is second. I literally felt like I could eat a sandwich off the Boston Common sidewalks...people really take pride in that city! Even the subways.

Boston Common isn't downtown, but it's close enough to include. Downtown Boston is Government Center, Downtown Crossing, Chinatown, The Leather District and Theater District. Those areas are dirtier than The Loop. If we want to expand our areas of consideration to "greater downtown", you'd add Boston Common, The Public Garden and The Back Bay. Those are all really clean, but I don't they compare favorably to the Mag Mile, River North, Streeterville, Grant Park and Millennium Park.
austin was really clean, downtown san diego is pretty amazingly clean to me at least. I really like the gaslamp quarter area. wish the padres and chargers were good, really bad sports town

SD is really clean. Sure the teams aren't good, but with that weather i bet the actual experience of going to the games must be great. I went to my first (and likely last) Jets game last year and it was super cold.

very true. sometimes I think good weather and beach options dont necessarily help a teams attendance or fan base. tampa, miami, san diego etc. I notice that teams with hardcore and loyal fan bases tend to be in places where the weather isnt always great . chicago, boston, etc.
San Diego and Seatte are both overall remarkably clean but both have fairly large homeless encampments...Urine smells, etc. Neither of them are outrageously extensive however and seem fairly confined to certain blocks. Overall I have to go with Chicago.
Don't know if this qualifies as major, but I was in Louisville's downtown for the first time Monday and there was an amazing amount of pedestrian traffic and street activity for such a small metro.
The Kentucky Derby is this weekend,I know people involved with work there and they headed up a few days ago also.
