They are located in the southern part of the West, which is completely different from being a Southern state.

They are most definitely Western.

I was studying in Scotland and living in a residence hall with about a dozen British students. The following conversation, paraphrased, occured:

British student: So, where in the states are from?

Me: New Mexico

British Student: Where is that?!?

Me: It's in the Southwest.

British Student: Oh, the South! Take off them panties, boy! Squeal like a pig! You got a real purty mouth, boy!

<followed by a month of a dozen British students making Deliverance references while I rolled my eyes having long given up trying to clarify the rather stark distinction between the American 'South' and the Southwest.>

You know what CookieSkoon meant. They are part of the Southwest, not what we call the "South".

people just associate the south with the southwest /mountain west because of movies and texas and cowboys and country/ western music. texas is perfect example of a state that can be various regions

I have a very slight southern accent and my friends in england used to whistle that theme from the good bad and ugly when I walked in and call me cowboy lol, I tried to explain that most westerns like outlaw josey wales were shot in places like utah and california but its pointless. movies pretty much stereotype people

Technically, no.

But when I was in Arizona recently, it did feel very culturally southern to me. Men in pick-up trucks with pro-gun, pro-Jesus and pro-life bumper stickers. This deep-seated mistrust of big government. Arizona also seems to be getting only redder politically while its neighbors (New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada) get bluer. The only western influences I noticed were in the tourist attractions. Arizona has definitely become a southern "ally" even if it isn't part of the South.
