Most people in the world don't know anything about assembly line history and don't drive Detroit cars.

Really? Where's your proof? Everybody knows about the Ford assembly line. The Model T was the very first mass produced car in the world and it came out of Detroit. A lot of people I'm sure believe the automobile was invented in Detroit and certainly it was a United States creation.

Motown? I struggle to believe that that many people outside of the United States know enough about Motown to make a connection with Detroit. Even if we limit the scope to just the developed part of the "West."

I'd ask you the same question. Prove to me that people abroad know of Motown and the auto industry.

They drive mostly Chinese-made Detroit nameplates.

Ford’s joint venture here in western China has 15,000 employees who assembled more than 600,000 vehicles last year, making it Ford’s largest operation outside southeastern Michigan. Ford is about to open an enormous factory here to manufacture 400,000 automatic transmissions annually, with room to expand to one million, followed by a third large car assembly plant at the end of the year. A fourth assembly plant is set to open in Hangzhou, in east-central China, in February.

China rarely imports such products--almost always the agreement is to produce products under license within China...and the contracts include handing over the design documents to China as well, which is why they're winning as well as why US corporate profits are up while manufacturing jobs are down.
