Students in Boston recently held a walk out of classes in opposition to budget cuts. It's interesting to note that Boston has the highest per-pupal spending on education in the country.
An insane $20,502 per student. Possibly the least sympathetic "walk out" of all time.
Interesting to compare to return on investment for each dollar of education spending.
Interesting.
For Florida, it seems that 4th grade does very well compared to most states at most subjects except for science. But Florida students in 8th and 12th grade perform very poorly to average compared to students in most states. Mathematic scores at 8th and 12th grade are especially bad.
Texas does well in mathematics, but is average to poor when it comes to reading.
California seems to perform poorly at all grades, all subjects and at all years. Same with Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona to some extent.
Illinois seems to be average at all grades, most subjects and at all years with the exception of 8th grade reading and writing, which is pretty good.
Pennsylvania performs very well at all grades, all subjects and at most years.
New York's student performance in mathematics seems to go from poor to average when going up to 8th grade from 4th. Reading scores seem to be about average.
Rhode Island seems to be the worst performer out of the Northeast. Michigan seems to be the worst in the Midwest

NY doesn't surprise me given how diverse the state is and this means quite a few ESL students due to immigrants/refugees.
You realize that these really high per-pupil expenditures are largely due to legacy costs and facilities maintenance, right? NY and MA are paying a lot of pensioners, and maintaining/heating a lot of very old buildings.

This doesn't surprise me due the the fact that 35% of children living in Texas have at least one foreign born parent (and the overwhelming percentage of those are Hispanic). State Demographics Data | migrationpolicy.org

And what do all those states have in common
I am torn between having some instruction in Spanish so we don't sell these kids short and teaching them English only because we shouldn't have to make special arrangements. It's a lose/lose situation.
I was just reading a news article that has a link to a National Center for Education Statistics website from the federal government.
I saw some interesting statistics from the report.
Texas despite it's terrible, reputation for bad schools has a higher 8th science score of 284 then California at 275.
Utah which spends $6,500 per student per year has a score of 286 compared to 280 in New York which spends $19,000 per student.
Massachusetts had the highest score at 297. Followed by New Hampshire with no state income tax at 294 and Minnesota at 294.
Another interesting thing is that Misssissippi scores higher then California at 4th grade Math with a score of 234 in Misssippi and 232 California.
What percentage of adult American citizens are living in the state where they went to K-12 school?
