I live just south of Downtown Albuquerque and our airport, the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is 2.5 miles from me and about three miles from our downtown.
This was back when the Albuquerque Sunport was much busier than it is now. It peaked at about 6.7 million passengers in both 1996 and 2007 and never went below 6 million throughout the 1990s and 2000s. It declined from 2008 until last year when it handled only 4.7 million passengers. The yearly declines should stop this year now that the monthly passenger numbers are rising again.
Here in Bellingham, WA I can get to BLI in ten minutes, but right now it's all domestics to Hawaii and the West Coast. Sea-Tac is about 100 miles- so generally 1.5-2.5 hours- traffic is definitely the wild card. Vancouver Int'l (BC) is actually only 50 miles from my house, though border wait times can add an extra 30-60 minutes. Even then, my wife's co-workers regularly fly out of YVR and say that it's quicker and more convenient than SEA.
I used to live like 12 miles from O'Hare. Now I am 42 miles from O'Hare (58 cities on 4 continents...no non-stops to Australia, African countries, or Antarctica), 54 miles from Rockford (Mexico), and 57 miles from Milwaukee (Mexico and Toronto). In terms of drive time, they're all 60 to 90 plus minutes away depending of weather and traffic.
I take it you don't fly often or when you do you have access to a much closer domestic airport?
