ok i don't agree with any of that. you can't define the south by what some people like and do and eat. that is my point. we are all individuals. moonpies and RC. good grief. think you would be hard pressed to find either in a gas station.
i dont see what cotton fields have to do with living int he south given most people don't work in the cotton fields. there is agricultural areas in every state pretty much.

OK - noted that you don't agree with any of it. That doesn't really change a thing about the reality of it.
And please - develop a sense of humor. (That's a southern trait FO SHO. )
oh yes, nobody outside of the south has a sense of humor.
just because somebody, doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. you are not judge and jury of that.
if yous ay there a difference between southern florida and other parts of the country, i can see that. the south is a melting pot, there are people from all over. and even natives don't do the same things.

I like that the vast majority of your list applies equally to white southerners and black southerners. I am someone who believes there is such thing as southern cultural folkways. But I really get upset when people define "southern culture" in such a way that it instead means "white southern culture." Indeed, I've seen some argument that many of the most distinctive elements of southern culture (e.g., what caused it to diverge from England) came from African influence.

I almost feel guilty about debating with you after reading this statement but I'll do it anyway (I sometimes do things I feel guilty about later).
Cotton is grown predominately in the southern US, and therefore vast stretches of cotton fields are something you are very likely to see in many southern states. I didn't say anything about how many people work in the cotton fields.
i don't know anybody that says 'blessed your heart' or eats moonpies and drinks RC. the blessed your heart thing sounds kind of passive aggressive to me. maybe all this was a joke.
what does a cotton field have to do with culture. that doesn't make any sense. if a large number of people wre working the land, that might make sense.
you don't see that many slave plantations in SC. the slavery thing was kind of a long time ago now. don't see how it reflects modern times in the south.

Thanks. And you make some good points yourself.
For me, it's very difficult to separate "white Southern culture" from "African American southern culture," especially since the American South has the highest concentration of AAs of any US region. Some major southern metro areas are 50 percent, or MORE than 50 percent, African American. The two cultures are entertwined and have been for hundreds of years.
Just ask Elvis. Oh, wait - he's dead. Or maybe not.

Correction - it doesn't make sense to YOU.
Look, I don't know where you live or how long you've lived there, or anything about your circle of friends or social habits, so I'm not going to debate "bless your heart" or RCs and moonpies with you. I just said that those elements are PART of southern culture. And I also said that doesn't mean that every southerner says or eats or drinks them. But more do than in any other region of the US. That's what makes them part of southern culture.
Terrain, weather, shared sights and experiences and history - all that weaves together to build elements of various cultures. This includes cotton fields and the history of the cotton trade in the American south.
Please quit fighting this logic and try to grasp it instead.
nobody has to agree with you. i think you are just listing stereotypes and caricatures. people are eating chicken all over the world. KFC is in California and it orginatated in Lousville which is the midwest.
college fball is popular all over the country with the exception of new england.
south has freedom of religion, you don't have to be a southern baptist.
if a person lives in the south, he or she is a southerner. that is all that is required.

Did you really read anything I said?
And uhh, yeah, this is the internet - I not only understand that people don't have to agree with me - I also understand that I am going to run across all sorts of goobers - as well as intelligent people who can formulate intelligent arguments or discussions on occasion. No one has to agree with me, even when I say that humans inhabit the planet Earth or that water is wet.
Wow.
