Good grief people, did anyone actually read the article? It is very short, doesn't use big words, and can be read in less than 20 seconds. The first sentence really explains it all "Chicago plans to join more than 20 other cities and shut off exterior lights on public buildings for an hour in an effort to raise environmental awareness." It is nothing more than a one hour publicity stunt that 20 cities are going to participate to raise awareness of how much energy it takes to illuminate large buildings at times when they are not in use. It does not mean that the city is going to shut off streetlights, it will not effect the crime rate, I can still turn on every light in my apartment from 8-9pm on the night in question if I so desire. Honestly, I doubt that anyone will really even notice a difference.
The larger issue of how much energy most cities waste in not using light appropriately though is a fair one, and even if one does not care about the environment. How do you think the city pays the bills to light up city hall at midnight? By taxing you of course.
My question is, will the amount of energy expended publicizing this shut off negate it?
