Why not do it like China? Have the entire country be on the same time zone. "Geographically, China covers five time zones (Zhongyuan, Longshu, Tibet, Kunlun and Changbai Time Zones). However, the standard times used in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan Province are the same, for they are all in the same time zone (UTC+8), 8 hours ahead of the Universal Time Coordinated."

Horrible idea, just like it is in China. Eastern time would obviously be the one chosen because of NYC and Washington DC, so that would mean here on Jun 21st, Sunrise would be at 8:18am and Sunset would be at 10:41pm, while on Dec 21st Sunrise would be at 9:28am and sunset would be at 7:24pm. Horrible
Yeah but if for example someone in California used to get up at 7 AM Pacific Time with the change to everything being Eastern Time they would just get up at 10 AM instead and the daylight they would experience wouldn't be any different than before. Another benefit would be if someone was setting up a remote meeting with someone across the country they could just suggest a time with no worries of a time zone error mixing things up.

My redrawn map has all of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee in Central Time, more in keeping with the actual geographic boundary, 82.5°W longitude
Mmm, why? Isn't that why those far-western counties of NW Indiana are on Central, to co-ordinate with Chicago?
Yes, the change from one time zone to another has to happen somewhere, but I think that's a lousy place to do it. When I lived in Champaign, IL, about 40 mi. west of the Indiana border, it didn't really matter what time it was in Indiana. But up there in the Chicago burbs, it would be very disruptive for a lot of people.
Michigan is awfully west to be in EST.. i think the entire state belongs in CST.
If Michigan is too far west then the back half of Georgia should be redrawn too. On an east/west longitude Atlanta falls almost in the center of Michigan which makes it statistically closer to Grand Rapids than Detroit.
Detroit 92 miles east of Atlanta which is 88 miles east of Grand Rapids. Perhaps the problem is not that Michigan is too far west, but rather that parts of New England are too far east.
