Upstate NY has some of the cheapest real estate in the country, I should know being a former Rochesterian myself. It's those NYS property taxes, that and the lack of high paying jobs depresses what people are willing to pay to own, and then pushes rents down as well

That seems low for the Port St Lucie/Stuart area, is it in a bad neighborhood? Here in Phoenix, a 3brd in a decent neighborhood is over $1600/month, and our prices are cheaper than SE FL on average

Yea property taxes are rough up here, especially Monroe County (Rochester). Big reason why we decided to not buy a house here. We are moving back north to Jefferson County (Watertown area) to buy a house once I graduate next May because property taxes are so much less there than here in Rochester. Plus we want to be back near family.

As for jobs, I know a lot of people who are doing very well for themselves in the Rochester area. I guess a lot just depends on the industry and who's hiring at the time.

I've found that "bad neighborhood" can be a bit relative. But we don't believe it's a bad neighborhood, and it's a gated community (although that can be deceiving, LOL). When we were looking (last October), it was about average for that size in this area.
