First and foremost I don't have a problem with "southerness".
With that said there is no way that the metropolitan area of Hampton Roads is "still very southern", it's just not valid. Please lay out your thought process in making that statement.

Whats with Baltimore trying to be the south all the sudden. Yall were wearing gold teeth, with capris and on some NY/ Philly stuff holding rap cyphers....now yall are synonymous with Atlanta, NO, and Miami because there are different versions of the south? Baltimore is like a midwest city in Maryland.

Translation @Mutiny

Why Baltimore cats all of sudden act like they from down south cities such as New Orleans, ATL, Houston, Memphis. Baltimore cats wearing gold teeth with capris but rap flows are NYC/Philly. Baltimore cats want be like down south cats but have bit of NYC/Philly influence. There different verisions of down south cats. Baltimore seem like Midwest city in Maryland

Baltimore has more influence on Philly than the other way around. We had this debate about a year ago, and it didn't go so well for Philly.

How is Baltimore synonymous with other Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans? Baltimore is its own unique city that isn't anything like any other city; it's still a southern city. Also, think about it, what is the Northeast influencing these days? Every other region is hot right while the Northeast is kinda.... Outdated.

It's ironic that people are complaining that Baltimore is a southern city, when they were already proclaiming that it was.

Baltimore rap isn't like NYC rap wtf!! I would say as far as rap goes, Baltimore is unique but definitely doesn't have a very strong Northeast feel to it. When I think NYC rap I think Primo type beats, lots more orchestral arrangements, about 100-120 beats per minute, a very "gritty" feel that isn't super club influenced. The classic Nas, Jay, Wu- Tang, Diplomats, KRS, etc. These rappers all had different styles but they followed a blueprint unique to the NYC sound.

And besides, Bmore is like halfway between VA and Philly, of course it would borrow from either just like how rappers in the Midwest borrow from areas they are closest to as well. As far as personal styles go, you can't expect Bmore to dress like ATL just because a magical Mason Dixon line is above it. Culture changes in gradients usually and not by minor latitudinal changes.

Heck Chicago is further from NYC than any city mentioned in this discussion and the hip hop there for the longest time had influence from points very very far. You would see cats in timbs but also with grills like those country boys. They dressed like East Coast down South cats. You wouldn't see dreads here because braids and fades were the thing. This was before that drill music garbage btw. Lupe Fiasco when he first came out is actually a good example of a pseudo East Coast style. Same with Common and Kanye. Twista on the other hand didn't seem East Coast at all. So, a city's rap style isn't necessarily indicative of the overall bigger picture of the culture. It is and it isn't. Baltimore can be expected to have Northern rap influences as well as Southern. I mean it's practically halfway down the coast so what do you expect?
