Default How much money should we save? HELP!

Our family has decided that at the end of the year/beginning of next year we will be relocating to Ithaca, New York from Virginia. We will rent for two years before I return to work full time. After a year of working full-time we will try to buy a home.

Before we move, we will secure a job and a place to rent.

We are a very middle class family. We don't have much in savings because we can only save $300 a month. My question is, if my husband has a job secured, rent is only a little more, and we have calculated in moving costs(truck, packing, groceries for the first few months, bills), how much more should we save before we move? We will never be able to save loads, but want to be as prepared as possible.

Thanks so much.
