Silly people. Don't you know that real hippies shunned capitalism? Imagine a society with no money. (Sounds like John L.) This was an experiment doomed. Remember the free store? Free everything? Then greed came along and destroyed it all. What an idealistic aspiration! The 2 groups who could best experience this were the very rich, and the very poor. The rich have already been well discussed here. I agree with the post. If you look like a hippie, but are rich and snobbish, how can you help your fellow brother? Unless of course you gave it all away. Then you would fall into the other class. Back in the day, most of the folks I knew were poor, but by choice. I guess it got old after a while.
Takilma, Oregon was such a place, in the day. There were rough built structures all down the riverbed. With a constant rotation of transient hippies moving in and out. Each shelter seemed to be an evolution, as each person would add something new. Substance, or the money to buy it, was hard to come by, but good times and parties were plentiful. Lots of good, fun loving hippies and hippie chicks. I wish I could find a place like that again! I went back to visit Takilma a few years back. The natural beauty is still there, but all the primitive dwelling and folks who live there were all gone. Long gone! Capitalism is a cruel taskmaster. Land ownership, and privatization abound. But those of us who saw these things and experienced them themselves are truly specially blessed! I risk sounding like an old guy fondly reminiscing about "the good ole days", maybe that’s what I have become. I don't think it was a failed experament, but rather a good learning experience If any of yall find the garden of Eden today, please let me know via these posts

Reason: error
Boulder, CO. It's where all hippies go to annoy people that can actually afford to live there. They wanted to build a big commune there. But the hippies couldn't get motivated enough to do anything other than lay back and go "duuuuude."
Look up Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, very hippie-ish.
Perhaps there were hippies there 40 years ago, before I was born. Regretfully, not anymore; it's nothing sushi bars, a store that sells wedding invitations, a couple dog groomers, "craft cocktail" lounges, and few boutiques that sell over-priced cocktail dresses that all look the same.
To connect with its hippie roots, you could now find a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop and a store that sells Bob Marley t-shirts. That's all.
"portal"? You mean Portland? Not a "hippie city" by any stretch of the imagination but it is a city where hippies can live happily.
Providing they can afford it.
