Just based on personal observations and assumptions, it seems like the major cities that are the most economically important--NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, etc--tend to be losing (or have lost) any local flavor they once had. They're full of people who show up to advance their careers at big companies and then move away, and there's not a big sense of local identity or civic pride among a large portion of the population. This is in contrast to smaller regional cities--say, New Orleans or Portland or Cleveland--that don't offer the same opportunities but have strong local cultures and a sense that residents are proud to live in their city and want to improve it. My question is whether there are any large cities with booming economies that have still maintained a sense of local identity and civic pride.

Richmond VA doesn't have a "booming" local economy but it is very healthy and well-rounded; it is a metro of about 1.3 million with 8 F500 headquarters, plus it's the state capital. Yet it is experiencing average to above-average population growth that allows it to retain much of its local character and identity.
