Oh, my goodness--how did Maryland not make that list?
Our current governor, Martin O'Malley, is really getting it from Democats and Republicans alike for the special session he forced through the General Assembly to raise BILLIONS in taxes. Our sales tax just went up to 6% this year.
His ratings are really dismal right now...deservedly so!

On the site I got this from maryland was ranked 13th behind Wyoming and Wisconsin as far as worst states for taxes go. It may be bad in Maryland, but it could always be worse. I live in Wisconsin and we are definetly a tax hell.

The LOOTING OF MARYLANDERS' POCKETBOOKS just happened in November/December 2007, and as you can tell, they didn't waste any time making it take effect (with the sales tax rise to 6% in January).
O'Malley and his buddies in the General Assembly colluded to ram this down everybody's throat.
We probably jumped up 10+ slots in the rankings (I wouldn't be surprised).
Does anyone truly like taxes? I think that is beside the point. From a quick glance at this list, I am willing to guess that most of these states rank highly in education and infrastructure, both of which require public funds to maintain.

I guess if you throw the public's money at everything, some of it will stick.
And another thing, you do it by consent...not by rushing everything up in a hastily-convened special session and effectively locking out debate by meeting in the middle of the night, and circumventing legislative rules.
I am a very liberal voter in Maryland (O'Malley lover) and it definitely is in the top ten. The voting records of our two senators are always considered two of the most liberal in the senate. Most of our state leaders are democrats leading to liberal. I would say the top are:
1. Massachusetts
2. Vermont
3. Rhode Island
4. Maryland
5. New York
6. Connecticut
7. Washington
8. Oregon
9. Illinois
10. New Jersey (this one should be moved up higher--forgot about it)
