I think you were misinterpreting what he was saying. It's simply interesting to note that most of the cities that pride themselves on being tolerant towards blacks have very little blacks there.
Austin is the same way when it comes to touting itself as liberal. But you just wait until the Texas Relays roll around...
But he said Liberals preach tolerance but how could you possibly be tolerant if you had to live around blacks like we do? As if being around African Americans was "intolerable" to him. Uptown is wrong, the Bay Area is the most African-American metro in California and it's a very liberal area. Uptown and I both went to a school in Minneapolis (Jefferson Elementary) that was at least 50% African American (at least when I was there -- she's a bit older than I)....so do we get a say or do we have to be from Atlanta to have a hand in this argument?

I never said you HAD to be around blacks to be tolerant. I was just saying that it's weird how all of these liberal areas are majority white yet speak on racial tolerance. Whether you agree or not; it would be a lot difference if it was different.

I'm pretty sure Jluke is black, so I doubt being around AA's is intolerable to him. I can't speak for him, but when I talk about those types of cities, I'm simply speaking of the hipocrisy I see from a lot of them on that subject.
I am getting old so my experiences may be a bit dated but they were surprised by how countercultural it was. I took some friends from Boston to a packed all ages Lords of Acid show at First Avenue in the mid '90s, people were having sex in the club, and it was mayhem in general. Also there were some interesting experiences at the CC Club and at some houseparties.
I can't say it's not possible, but it's not hypocrisy coming from Uptown or I....just so you know. I'm no expert either, but myself and my wife (who also went to school that was over 50% black in Cleveland, OH) are white liberals that try to be tolerant of others no matter who they are. We're also not "extreme" leftists, so maybe that's part of the issue. In general, I agree that people who don't surround themselves with diversity or grow up that way should not be touting social tolerance and peace (you should walk before you talk), but it's not a bad concept for ANYONE either.

Wow! I'm pretty sure that's not "par for the course" in Minneapolis, as I've never seen anything like that, but that's certainly an intersting experience!

Are you saying they don't do that in Boston?
Yeah, that is the only time I have seen that in a club here, although some of the raves in the early 90s were pretty out of hand, but those wern't in "real" venues.
Does it define a city? No. Does it have any relevance to tolerance? Very much.
I'd love to see places like Seattle and SF become AA magnets like Atlanta and see how the citizens of these areas handle it.
I agree with everything else you stated though and didn't mean to generalize liberals; I know all aren't the same, but the extreme ends of both conservativeness and liberalness can be annoying.
Uhh ever heard of this place called Oakland? It is where the Black Panthers started...Bay Area was a magnet for black migration. That's about as far to the left as a black group ever got. They were Maoists.
Just to clarify one of my earlier comments: the Bay Area has lots of black residents; the city of San Francisco doesn't (although there are still plenty of black residents, and some neighborhoods with long-established black communities). The city itself is still very diverse, though, and as noted, the Bay Area as a whole does indeed have a rich African American history. It always bugs me when racial diversity is framed primarily as being white/black exclusively, as it so often is.

I was speaking about SF. I do know SF has its black areas though. I wouldn't really put it in the same category as Seattle or Portland when it comes to lack of Black culture.
