I intentionally left Crazy Horse off the list. I don't think it's worth the money. They've been working on that thing since the Truman Administration, and I guarantee you at the pace they're going it won't be done for a couple hundred years. Make no mistake, at $28 a carload (and a million visitors per year) they're not exactly starved for cash.
Wall Drug is definitely the ultimate in roadside kitsch, but unlike Crazy Horse you're not obligated to buy anything. Meandering through the store won't cost you a dime and it's an ok stop right before or right after you hit the Badlands.
Been to Carhenge once. It's free and funky. If you're gonna meander that far south you may as well head over to Chimney Rock and/or Scotts Bluff.
A lot of people outside the area have never heard of it but if you're ever in Western New York defiantly check out Letchworth State Park, aka "The Grand Canyon of the East". More well known sights in New York State are Niagara Falls and Adirondack State Park, especially the High Peaks region of the park.

We went last fall during peak fall foliage and it was amazing. Seeing the hot air balloons in the sky made it like something out of a fantasy movie. Unfortunately my camera battery died right as we entered the park . Will definitely be going back this fall with a full battery!!!

I tend to agree about Crazy Horse, but I think the fact I'll never see it completed adds to the appeal. However, it's not cheap to get in, only to be able to see it from a distance. If you are there during the Volksmarch weekends (first weekend in June and Roundup weekend in September), it's fun to hike up to the carving and see it up close. Admission is a few cans of food and a few bucks. It's crowded, though.
If dipping down into Nebraska, Fort Robinson is a cool place to visit, as well as Toadstool Geologic Park.
