I don't know about "middle of the county" but the nature in Arizona is absolutely stunning. I thought metro Phoenix had a great deal of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. I did the super tourisy thing and hiked Camelback mountain but I'm sure locals could give you more nuanced advice.

The Black Hills of Western South Dakota and Northeastern Wyoming.

Custer State Park, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Deadwood, Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Spearfish Canyon, Sturgis, and last but not least, Wall Drug.

Sedona AZ- the beauty of the southwest, the great red monuments

Grand Canyon- obvious!

Route 66 thru New Mexico- the short green grass and the great open skies

Southwestern Virginia- just beautiful.

Smoky Mountains, Tennessee- the mist and the fog- heavenly.

Subtract: Wall Drug (the midwest version of Pedro's South of the Border). But if you like kitsch, keep it on the list.

And as long as you're in the neighborhood (kind of, sort of): Carhenge | of Alliance, Nebraska is a couple of hours away.
