I have lived in either Austin, TX, Houston, TX or OKC, OK my entire life. I'm a liberal educator whose both an introvert and a nature lover. I'm also into eating healthy home cooked fare and gardening, so access to a nice grocery store is more important to me than restaurants. I teach college English, but I have an elementary and middle school teaching certificate so I can most likely get a teaching position wherever I move to. I need to be able to go outside in nature and be away from people weekly if not daily but also be safe (from bad guys and bears). I have 2 little ones ages 6 and under, a teen and a husband tagging along. My husband works in IT/customer care, but he also has a degree in horticulture. I am looking for mild temps and low crime. OKC has high crime, ice storms, tornados, hail and 6 weeks of 95-100 degree weather every year that wears me down. I considered Boise, Idaho, but they seem to have issues with wildfire smoke and winter pollution due to something called inversion. I have done very little traveling, but I would like to live in the NW region of the US. I'm avoiding tourist towns because it seems like being surrounded by wealthy people on vacation might be irritating. Any thoughtful recommendations are appreciated.

Thank you,

Sounds like you're looking for Bellingham, WA. It sports two food co-ops, a farmers market, Whole Foods, and others. Nice mild summers, dreary winters, air is pretty clean. Not cheap, but there are more affordable towns close by. Some Seattle area suburbs/cities could work as well. I like Edmonds and Mukilteo. Prices here may shock you coming from OK...

Thanks, Arushan. I'll look into Bellingham and the suburbs you mentioned.

I would recommend checking out a city like Eugene OR which would fulfill a good bit (if not all) of your criteria.

If you are looking for "mild" temps...........does that include winter temps as well? Because it gets pretty cold in the winter in the PNW if you get east of the Cascades.

I will second the Eugene idea. It is reasonably liberal, not excessively expensive, and very pretty if you can get through the three of four months of rain and fog in the winter.

Corvallis is smaller but is a nice place. Salem would probably work for you to.
