To this floridians eyes, People from western New York are indistinguishable from people from western PA. Northeast corridor New Yorkers are much different.
Accent, attitude, disposition, ancestry, etc. I also find them (upstate New Yorkers and West Pennsylvania) almost indistinguishable from the nearby Midwest states like Ohio, Michigan, etc.
Ironically, the Ithaca metro is usually 1 or 2 out of all metros in terms of college educational attainment. For instance, according to 2010-2014 Census info, Ithaca is second behind Los Alamos NM in regards to percentage of those 25 and older with at least a Masters degree out of 868 metro and micro areas.
Not really ironic; it's a metro that heavily influenced by a university and a few related businesses and doesn't have much else. It would be surprising if it was near the top of the list.

I think there are some similarities, but there are/may be some slight differences.

When they move to Florida, there are zero differences.
