Accent, attitude, disposition, ancestry, etc. I also find them (upstate New Yorkers and West Pennsylvania) almost indistinguishable from the nearby Midwest states like Ohio, Michigan, etc.

Not really ironic; it's a metro that heavily influenced by a university and a few related businesses and doesn't have much else. It would be surprising if it was near the top of the list.

heh Try moving to the deep south for a decade and then come back not feeling like "Yankee" is an insult.

You have never been to Pittsburgh, then.
The Talk of the Town: Pittsburghese - Popular Pittsburgh
Even the erudite PBS: Do You Speak American . Sea to Shining Sea . American Varieties . Pittsburghese | PBS
It's even well known in Vancouver: Pittsburgh – “the Galapagos Islands of American dialect” | Vancouver Sun

Nope, but I can name at least 10 friends from the area. They are no different from Buffalo people.

I think there are some similarities, but there are/may be some slight differences.

That is true, but I think people think that Upstate NY is strictly blue collar. There quite a few Upstate NY areas that are high on the list in that regard. NYS areas and percentages of those with at least a Masters degree
