I don’t think people complaining about golf courses realize that the municipal ones fund/maintain their other city parks that’s they like to use for free.

As it being only for the rich, I can play Torrey Pines, a city owned PGA tour course, along the coast in San Diego for $42. Balboa Park, just a couple of miles from downtown is $32 for the 18 hole course, and only $14 for the 9 hole executive course.

Whether you play golf or not, wouldn’t you rather drive/train/walk/bike by a golf course than a commercial center or housing developments? A great 27 hole course, Riverwalk, in Mission Valley, San Diego, is being replaced by more condos, shopping, office space, and tons of traffic that’ll come with it. We could use more urban golf courses to curb development and maintain open green space, unfortunately the opposite seems to be happening.

I don't think of the Bronx golf courses as particularly urban, but Chicago Parks District has some really urban courses.

There are a surprising amount of golf courses in New York City. Most are public and 18 holes, usually inside large parks but there are also a few private ones as well. These are the ones I know about.

The Bronx

Van Cortlandt - 18 holes
Split Rock - 18 holes
Pelham Bay - 18 holes
Trump Golf at Ferry Point - 18 holes https://www.trumpferrypoint.com/
Mosholu - 9 hole double tee
Turtle Cove - driving range and mini golf

Brooklyn

Dyker Beach - 18 holes
Marine Park - 18 holes
Brooklyn Golf Center - Driving range and mini golf.

Manhattan

Randalls Island Golf Center - driving range and mini golf
Chelsea Piers - driving range

Queens County

Clearview - 18 holes
Douglaston - 18 holes
Kissena Park - 18 holes
Forest Park - 18 holes
North Shore Towers - 18 holes (private)
Breezy Point - 18 hole pitch and put
Flushing Meadows 18 hole pitch & put and mini golf
Golden Bear (Alley Pond) - driving range and mini golf

Staten Island

LaTourette Golf Course - 18 holes
Silver Lake - 18 holes
South Shore (Grand Oaks) - 18 holes
Richmond County Country Club - 18 holes? (private)

Franklin Park Golf Course in Boston is in the literally middle of Boston's dense black neighborhoods.
