Boston is so far from a baseball city. The BoSox are just a cultural Hong of the upper middle class and upper class to have business meetings during games. Or as something to do before or after you spend a weekend in the Cape. Patriots fans are the most dedicated. But the city itself if primarily engaged in basketball due to demography but the metro region is Hockey then Basketball. High school baseball and football are non factors.
St. Louis. Going to a baseball game there is more than a past time. Its something every baseball fan should experience at least once, especially if the Cubs are in town.
Cincinnati where I grew up used to be a baseball town but lately younger generations are learning more towards liking football and college sports. Cincinnati is now mostly a college/HS sports town. I kid you not HS football here is bigger than the Reds and Bengals in a lot of the town that is part of the reason everyone asks you what HS you went to when you come to Cincinnati.
I think Boston is riding the coattails of unprecedented championship success during the social media age which gives them a lot more exposure than previous decades.
New England is a pretty big area the Red Sox cover as well, which seems to be lost on some people.
That's 545,000 within the Boston Media Market, it's well over 1,000,000 people across The NESN range (MA+NH+ME+RI+CT-Fairfield County). All of New England has less population then NYCs media Market, and The Red Sox have double the baseball viewership with 1/2 the teams.
You expect Ortiz's final year to be record low viewership?
The Red Sox are in contention for the postseason. They're still making big headlines with offseason signings.
The Yankees are in the process of entering a new era with a bunch of nobodies.
The Mets are coming off a WS appearence and it was ARods last year as well after the Yankees made the playoffs. The Sox are coming off a rather sad season not making the playoffs.
Ya, Betts, Leon and bradly Jr were on everyone's radar coming into the season.
The Yankees are 3.5 games out of the wildcard and well over .500.
"The Dodgers have a loyal fanbase, evidenced by the fact that the Dodgers were the first MLB team to attract more than 3 million fans in a season (in 1978), and accomplished that feat six more times before any other franchise did it once.[30] The Dodgers drew at least 3 million fans for 15 consecutive seasons from 1996 to 2010, the longest such streak in all of MLB.[30] On July 3, 2007, Dodgers management announced that total franchise attendance, dating back to 1901, had reached 175 million, a record for all professional sports.[31] In 2007, the Dodgers set a franchise record for single-season attendance, attracting over 3.8 million fans.[32] In 2009, the Dodgers led MLB in total attendance.[33] The Dodger baseball cap is consistently in the top three in sales.[34]"
"The Dodgers set the world record for the largest attendance for a single baseball game during an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox on March 28, 2008 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in honor of the Dodgers 50th anniversary, with 115,300 fans in attendance."
Dodgers Stadium is also the largest MLB stadium by seating capacity.
