Contrast that with a map of the Southeast where multiple states have borders all over the place. For instance, southeast states by your definition like North Carolina and Georgia, go further west then parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. It would be strange to have West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, etc. all in different regions.

That is why a large natural border is superior when one is available. It just so happens that one is available for the Southeast - it is called the Mississippi River.
Arkansas and Louisiana are every bit as Southeastern as the states east of the Mississippi River. Culturally, linguistically, and demographically they are identical to the rest of the South.

VA is both. Being Mid-Atlantic in the colloquial sense doesn't negate VA's Southern status. Southern and Mid-Atlantic aren't mutually exclusive. I'm from ATL originally and I know that your average person from Hampton Roads, RVA, Charlottesville, and NoVA have a more moderate/toned down brand of Southern than those from like 75% of the rest of the South.

Most of those areas are the most "blue" in the state you will see. What about the whole western half of the state? Those areas are in the Eastern area are transplant havens like central Atlanta.
Its a see of Red.

Virginia Presidential Election Results by County | Results Map 2008 Vs 2012

Virginia definitely has more in common with its Southern Roots than Mid Atlantic. Most people dont experience the other side of VA because they generally feel they have no need to.Much like many people in Atlanta never visit much outside of Atlanta except the Mountains or Savannah(coast)

The Western parts of the state are more Appalachian, a city like Roanoke can fit in NC or even West Virginia. That's about it bro. It's all gradient anyway but your average Virginian would hail from the cities that I listed 7/10 times so they would probably feel more at ease in FL (like most people), ATL (because it has some NoVa like elements, and NC and MD (self-explanatory). Regarding the Southern roots, remember that the culture was a derivative of Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay culture anyway.

Good point about Western Virginia though.

I do not agree with you about Louisiana and Arkansas although many do. It is true they are Southern as you say culturally but that does not necessarily mean they are Southeast. Southern is the cultural region, including not just Louisiana and Arkansas but Texas and Oklahoma as well. Southeast in contrast is a geographical region.

The majority of the boundaries I have seen over the years show the Southeast as east of the Mississippi River and south of the Ohio Rivers because the rivers are obvious natural boundary lines. This is what the American Association of Geographers consider the Southeast.

South Central States https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_..._United_States

Louisiana and Arkansas are normally seen as South Central States geographically along with Texas and Oklahoma.

What would you classify Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina?
