This isn't to be taken as an insult to Los Angeles but I have yet to see a city with more unique city boundaries than Los Angeles. Their are suburbs only five miles from the downtown while in other areas are 20 miles away and still considered part of the city of Los Angeles. The metro itself seems oddly shaped. Are their any other cities with more unique boundaries.
Los Angeles-

Houston-

New York-

Kansas City-

Please put central cities of any metro over 1 million and if you want suburbs over 200,000. By weird I also mean far flung areas, or places were Downtown is that no one looking at a map of the urban sprawl of the city would expect it to be.

I guess the criteria would be cities who central business district or downtown is on the edge of the city, as opposed to the center. Cambridge is much closer to downtown Boston than Dorchester is. Hudson County NJ is much closer to Manhattan than Flushing is.

Some large cities whose downtowns are directly on Rivers which are also state boundaries and also form the city limits

Washington DC - Arlington VA, (much taller buildings are permiitted in Arlington than in DC)
Philadelphia PA - Camden NJ (the boundary of Philadelphia projects far out to the northeast)
Detroit MI - Windsor ON
Cincinnati OH - Covington KY
Memphis TN - West Memphis AR
Louisville KY - IN
Omaha NE - Council Bluffs IA (Omaha sprawls out far to the west)
Providence RI - Seekonk MA
Portland OR - Vancouver WA
Saint Louis MO - East St Louis IL

Hamtramck MI, is a curious example of an enclave which is contained inside Detroit, MI, but is independent of it

El Paso, TX - Juarez, Mex

East Providence that borders Seekonk is a separate town from Providence.

Chicago is kind of odd in that it has almost no east side to it's street grid, State St runs right near Lake Michigan

Many cities have weird city limits, but I always find myself scratching my head when I see Fort Worth.

Scottsdale, AZ has really odd city boundaries. I guess you could call it a "tall but thin" city because there are some parts where from west to east, the city is no wider than 2.5 miles. However, north to south, it's around 30 miles.

The extremely "thin" part of Scottsdale is the area south of Doubletree Ranch Road/Gainey Ranch.

Houston's has wierder city limits than LA with Kingwood Island, and the strip annexations on the fringes. LA is just a city that annexed west of downtown.

Miami is pretty strange as to what they decided to make city and suburb.

I thought Seattle was pretty long vertically.
Chicago like someone said haas no east side.
It spreads out 180 instead of 360
