Edit: If there's any accuracy to the data in this list (also not sure how old this is), I think Austin and Seattle would be great choices comparing average starting salary of police officers to city average salary. With Texas cost of living, I'd give the edge to Austin.
That talks about COL and salary, but it doesn't mention how much officers in those cities actually enjoy their jobs. The people you deal with on a daily basis can make you hate your job.
The police are really really patient. They're one of the most community oriented polices forces in the nation. The Boston Police Department pioneered or was an early participant in the National Ten Point Coalition, ShotSpotter, Operation CEASEFIRE, and many other tools that have been implemented nationally to make community policing more effective. IN addition to this Boston police are exceedingly involved with the church and very rarely display police brutality. and in the past two years they've dealt with at least three officers being shot (one point blank in the head, two with knives pulled on them and just two days ago one had their police cruiser shot at (shot a window out). Police cruiser thefts are not all that uncommon
However the racial climate of Boston makes the black population constantly suspicious of white people (especially Irish) in positions of power therefore there is a lot of baseless hate against our police force which is comparatively good when compared to other east coast cities. There is also a lot liberalism which promotes this sentiment. In addition to this punishments and judges are very lax in general in Southern New England. So there a lot of repeat offenders. In addition to this the lack of a street grid, tight and winding streets, and neighborhood tribalism, can make for lots of hiding spots and extremely difficult pursuits. They are also under constant pressure of a race-based quota system.
But they get paid well so it all evens out. Also many of them just show up to work to get paid and dont care that much about the criminals. There are cops who chase and then there are cops who just sit in their cars.
