Anyway below are the details of the rankings if anyone's interested. The top 50 US universities in each ranking are assigned scores from 50 to 1 and grouped by MSA. I only used the top 20 MSAs by 2015 population estimates for simplification and assigned "Other" to the rest (interestingly the "other" bucket is by far the largest one which tells you that great universities are everywhere). 4 additional smaller MSAs were also included in the analysis: San Jose and Baltimore because the question always comes up with looking at the SF and DC CSAs and not MSAs. I also included Durham-Chapel Hill and Pittsburgh because they have multiple universities in all the rankings and therefore punch above their weight.

Anyway I mentioned the top 3 tiers before, which directly come from the average scores from the 3 rankings. On the flip side there are 6 metros in the top 20 that don't figure in the rankings at all:

Nah, you have to. Philadelphia is very strong when it comes to high education...I do think that it's a city that goes toe to toe with Boston in this regard. DC, LA, NYC and the Bay Area are all well over St. Louis in high education (ATL and the RDU triangle is ahead of STL too).

LOL, that's what I was thinking.

Boston has Brandeis and Harvard. St. Louis has Washington University in St. Louis, Saint Louis University, Webster University, Lindenwood and University of Missouri-St. Louis. Chicago has Northwestern, University of Chicago, Loyola and DePaul. Pittsburgh has Carnegie and I believe a few others. Houston has Rice. Baltimore has Johns Hopkins. Philadelphia I'm sure has good ones. So name me the top cities for academic institutions in the country.
No one has ever heard of Lindenwood or Webster, and Univ of Missouri-STL is just the urban campus of the state university. Nothing special about any of these. Boston/Cambridge's institutions would fill a phone book..

They love their St. Louis even when it's not relevant.

Harvard has a good portion of its campus in Boston. It's renowned business school is in Boston. It's athletic fields are in Boston. Its medical school is in Boston. They're also expanding their life sciences with new buildings in Boston. They also have dorms in Boston. So the notion that Harvard is not in Boston doesn't hold any weight.

I'd vote for Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Los Angeles as the best big cities for colleges and universities.

Again, I'm not looking at the US News college rankings, which everyone keeps focusing on. This is the US News Best Global University Rankings, which are more indicative of the overall research quality and reputation (including faculty) of a university.

Indeed. But as I said earlier I was only looking at MSAs. I just threw in a comment about the SF and DC CSAs because that seems to be a pet topic of controversy on CD

None of those lists are infallible.

I posted that because you made Denver look like a troglodyte city.

Yes no ranking is perfect. Which is why I'm averaging 3 different ones published on 3 different continents to at least get a more nuanced view.

I grouped things by MSA for convenience. Not a perfect method and so some areas are going to get shortchanged. But if you did include Boulder, the Denver area would have an average score of 15, putting it above Houston and DFW.
