It's pretty sad that of 50 U.S. states, only one of them -- New Hampshire -- has a murder rate lower than the average murder rate in Canada. Think about that: You're slightly more likely to be murdered in Vermont and Maine than you are in a random place in Canada.
New England is one of the safest regions in the USA. All six sates are in the bottom three grades. This is especially impressive for the three southern New England states (CT/RI/MA) which are fairly urbanized.
This is a city vs. city thing kind of, Louisiana is actually much closer to Alabama and Georgia in rates it's just that the 2 biggest cities skew the numbers of along with a few smaller towns. Baton Rouge and New Orleans 52% of 202 murders combined 259, and there were 495 in the state. Yet they only have roughly 1/8th of the population of the state in 2012. Take them out of the equation and the rate drops to 5.5-6.0 range depending on city.
what do you mean by large? 5 mil+, i consider large states 10mil+ or at least more than 6.5 mil+ since 320 million live in the U.S(50 states), divide by 50 you get 6.5 million people per state, so for me Massachusetts get that honor and if we are truly talking about large states 10mil+ then New York.
Minnesota appears to be the safest large state. +1 for Minnesota.
Right, and the fact that over half the population lives in one metro (and that it has a large metro, which highly skews these figures) is definitely impressive. Milwaukee completely screws up Wisconsin's rate, though we do have more mid-sized cities as well.
New York has a 3.1 rate, which is worse than every state north of it - I don't believe it's notable in the way Minnesota is at all. It's at double the rate. MA is pretty impressive, especially being a small state dominated by one metro. I believe that's what this poster means by "large state," in terms of a large-sized state.
The Bahamas is safe in tourist areas, have the most expensive hotel room in the world, if you go to the U.S Virgin islands, I am pretty sure for tourists it is safe, living there is a whole different ballgame.
