Yes, I can see that. Very similar to Philadelphia that other people mentioned. If I had to pick between the two, I would say Philadelphia but it is close.
I guess Syracuse isn't bad. 4 hours to NYC, Toronto, Montreal and Philadelphia. Boston is about 4 and a half hours away. DC, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are about 6 hours away, among other cities(Ithaca, the other major Upstate NY cities, etc).
In terms of mountains, the Adirondacks are about an hour and a half, the Poconos and Catskills are about 2 hours away and the Taconics and Berkshires are about 2 1/2 hours away.
Lake Ontario is 45 minutes away, with the eastern most Finger Lakes only 20 minutes away. There are other lakes within minutes of the city.
The 1000 Islands are an hour and a half away. Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, is about the same.
I may be missing some things, but those are some of the things that come to mind.
Agreed. I think Syracuse is in a good location, especially compared to say Rochester. Besides Syracuse being closer to places like the Adirondacks and the Thousand Islands, Syracuse is also at a crossroads:
I-90 (New York State Thruway) goes east and west - Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland to the west, with Albany, NYC and Boston to the east.
I-81 goes north and south - Ottawa and Montreal to the north, with Philadelphia, Baltimore and WDC to the south.
Detroit - Chicago 4hr 10 millions CSA
Detroit - Toronto 4hr 6.5 million CSA
Detroit - Buffalo 3hr 2 Million CSA
Detroit - Cleveland 2.5 hrs 3.5 Million CSA
Detroit - Grand Rapids 1.75 hrs 1.5 Million CSA
Detroit - Columbus 3.5 hrs 2.5 Million CSA
Detroit - Pittsburgh 4.5 hrs 2.6 Million CSA
Detroit - Indianapolis 4.5 hrs 2.5 Million CSA
Lots of places to visit that are less than 5 hrs away. Of course...that is downtown to downtown. Metro to metro take off an hour. There are 8 MSA's over a million in less than a 5 hours drive from D town.

Columbus has fairly good access to a variety of cities. I don't think I would go as far as saying it is one of the best located since the BosWash corridor likely takes that title.
Columbus to:
Cincinnati-106.6 miles, 1 hour 42 minutes, MSA of 2.1 million
Cleveland-143.9 miles, 2 hours 12 minutes, MSA of 2.0 million
Indianapolis- 175.6 miles, 2 hours 39 minutes, MSA of 1.9 million
Pittsburgh- 184.8, 2 hours 57 minutes, MSA of 3.3 million
Detroit- 205.2 miles, 3 hours 21 minutes, MSA of 4.3 million
Louisville- 206.0 miles, 3 hours, 11 minutes, MSA of 1.2 million

The 2 corridors that I think of is the I-85 corridor (Atlanta/Greenville/Charlotte/Greensboro/Raleigh-Durham/Richmond-Petersburg) and the I-95 corridor (Washington/Baltimore/Philadelphia/NYC/Providence/Boston).
