Out of those Maine, New Hampshire and New York border Canada, part of your criteria.

Out of the last three states, New York borders the Great Lakes and has rustbelt areas.

OK makes sense. But Pennsylvania is not coastal.

Couldn't help but notice that this poll left out Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Jersey, but left in Nebraska, South and North Dakota...

New York might be the best choice here, with its urban/rural contrasts, Atlantic Coast/Rust Belt connections, strong Catholic population, forests w/dairyland, and water access much of the state.

Minnesota might be a decent stereotypical choice, with its heavily-forested northern region, dairy farms, and frigid temperatures. In a contest in which you're asked to name a "northern state", Minnesota might be a very strong "impulse" choice, because of its wintry reputation..

it's not that cold

I went with Minnesota. Scandinavians, hockey, lakes, ice fishing, liberal politics, northernmost point in the continental US. It screams NORTHERN.

Alaska is the most Northern though let's me honest. Can't get more north than that.
