New York maybe...I guess it has all three things characteristic of the north in it...the New England influence, the Rust Belt, and the Bos-Wash corridor.
Couldn't help but notice that this poll left out Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Jersey, but left in Nebraska, South and North Dakota...
New York might be the best choice here, with its urban/rural contrasts, Atlantic Coast/Rust Belt connections, strong Catholic population, forests w/dairyland, and water access much of the state.
Minnesota might be a decent stereotypical choice, with its heavily-forested northern region, dairy farms, and frigid temperatures. In a contest in which you're asked to name a "northern state", Minnesota might be a very strong "impulse" choice, because of its wintry reputation..

Surprised there's no votes for ND considering it literally has North in its name.
Alaska is the most Northern though let's me honest. Can't get more north than that.
