Virginia has it all - mountains, beautiful coastline, the Chesapeake Bay, rolling countryside, big cities, small towns, rural villages, you name it.

North Carolina is in second place for the same reasons, and Arkansas is third.

Texas and Louisiana get honorable mention because though much of those states can be sort of boring in a mildly pleasant way, they each have some very unique landscapes - the bayous of Louisiana and the Texas Hill Country.

SC is my home state and it's not uninteresting, but I think a lack of mountains hurt it here; there's only a small sliver in the northwestern part of the state and its beaches aren't "exotic" like Florida's.

Funny, I SO prefer the beaches of South Carolina. More character and history and MUCH less development than your average Florida community.

Yeah I know it's a subjective thing but Florida just has so many beaches that can be enjoyed almost year-round with prettier water and sand, particularly on the Gulf Coast. South Florida/Key West has a very tropical appearance which appeals to many people. Most of Florida's beaches are indeed heavily developed but you can also find quieter beaches with not as much going on.
