NASCAR is a national sport, it is not a southern sport. living in the south isn't about eating grits. it is just a n opition on breakfast menus. many southerners rarely or never eat grits. northerners define any little thing that isn't as common in the north as 'southern' , as though everything is relative to the north. why isn't it 'northern' that they don't have grits and sweet tea on menus.

Jazz and Blues is the mixture of French, Caribbean and Spanish music that's why it was invented in New Orleans, not Atlanta or Charlotte.
Similarly Rap, R&B, and Motown were created by Southern Immigrants to the North, but they were forged in the mix of Northern and Southern Culture. The changes made would not have happened if there was no Great Migration.
Carnival (Mardi Gras) is cultural to the South similar to how it is to Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Barbados and etc.

There is no French, Spanish or Caribbean influence in Jazz, Blues music.

Many elements, such as the call-and-response format and the use of blue notes, can be traced back to the music of Africa. The origins of the blues are also closely related to the religious music of the Afro-American community, the spirituals. The first appearance of the blues is often dated to after the ending of slavery and, later, the development of juke joints. It is associated with the newly acquired freedom of the former slaves.
And you're confusing influences with actually appropriating someone's culture as it pertains to one's own. Brazil, Mexico, the DR, and etc. have influences but they still develop their own distinctive cultures. No where else in America, other than the South, developed their own culture throughout history.

4. As for California, as a whole California was settled by mostly southerners. There was a mass diaspora of whites and blacks from TX, Louisiana, AR, MS, and OK out west About 150 years ago till even today which is what made California what it is today. Californians without southern roots are the minority.
An interesting story regarding this:

When I was in California, my roommate was a native Californian and his parents were Okies that fled the Dust Bowl. He made biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, and lots of other southern cuisine. The part of California he was from, Bakersfield, he said was so southern if you landed there you would literally think you were in Oklahoma still to this day.

Rap, r&b, and mowtown were not a cultural mix of both. They were pure southern African American. When those were created and made up north the people that made it were all transplants that were born and raised in the south and they were segregated from everyone else up north and only allowed to live in neighborhoods that were 100 percent southern transplants, even the white areas closest to them were mostly southern transplant neighborhoods. The northerners live far away and separated themselves from them and the people that invented those forms of music had almost zero interaction or even exposed to "northern culture" which doesn't exist anyway cause the northerners were mostly new arrival ethnic whites from Europe that didn't then an still don't have a distinct culture, just a watered down hybrid of there home countries culture mixed with emulations of southern white culture.

The only reason some of those art forms were made up north was it was the first time those people had the opportunity to actually record the music they had been singing and playing for years. Same with country music being "invented" in Nashville. Hillbillies had been making country music for many decades but lived isolated in abject poverty and Nashville was the closest place that had recording studios and enough people to market and sell the music.

That's wrong. California, as with most of the West, was settled by mostly midwesterners. Coastal California, got some Northeasterners as well. If Californians had mostly southern roots their accent would reflect that. In 1900, 4-5% of Californians were born in the South; it never reached more than 10%. Midwest + Northeast was several times higher:

I've never understood why the standard of living and education, seems to differ so much from regions. I don't know about the South defining the culture of he USA. I've always wondered why the South, isn't it's own country. I'm also going to add this. You would be hard pressed to find many people, that live in a state outside of the southeast,. Referring to themselves as a Northerner.

As is indicated by the poll numbers, I don't think any one region, can claim to define the culture of the US. Every region can claim something definitive.
