Do you agree with this statement?

The South has defined the culture of the United States more than any other region.

If you look at some of the best things that have come out the US, from music (Jazz, Blues, R&B, Country, Blue Grass) to food (sweet tea, grits, gumbo, barbecue) to a distinct accent to distinct American iconic things (high school football, NASCAR, front porch swings), it seems the cultural influence of the South has outweighed every other region.

My theory is that the South was settled early on by colonists and slaves and then there was little immigration for a long period of time which allowed an isolated culture to develop. The north had so many immigrants that their cuisine is more European in nature (Italian/Irish mainly). The Southwest seems more an extension of Mexico, the Midwest was mainly settled by northern Europeans.

In any case, do you agree with this assessment. Also, can you state why the Southern culture is more monolithic than other places. For instance, the culture of Philly is vastly different than even NYC and they are really close. Also include where you live as I suspect other regions may be more reluctant to admit how much influence the South has had.

Black people have defined the culture of the USA, as in most uniquely American art forms came out of Black America; jazz, blues, soul, rock, hip-hop, house and techno.

A disproportionate share of America's cultural contributions have come from the South, especially when it comes to music.

Pre-Great Migration. Post-Great Migration, our most important musical art forms have come out of NY, Detroit and Chicago.

And they came from Southerners that moved North, so it's basically the same thing. For the most part, the North commercialized or fused genres that were created in the South.

"Southern" culture isn't more monolithic...especially accents. Colonist didn't settle "The South" they colonized the "New World" forming different colonies. "Slaves" didn't settle much either. If you mean Africans who had been enslaved or indentured then....I doubt folks think of themselves as "immigrants"

Most "immigrants" were European so all of their cuisine is European in nature. The difference is the African influences in ANY place where Blackfolks lived. And local NA tribes.

Virginia and Maryland was never isolated.

I would also think that New York and the Northeast as well as California and "the West Coast" has had just as much influence in defining the "culture" of modern day United States as "the South"...wherever, whenever, and whatever you consider that place to be.

Culturally, I would say so, a lot has come out of the South in spite of how poor it is.

Are you talking about Washington and jefferson and all the early virginians influence on the formation of the country? In terms of contemporary culture, LA and Manhattan define the media and contemporary culture. dixieland ,jazzs, blues, etc are not the dominant form of music, etc and most of the media comes from Manhattan and LA

More like because of the poverty and oppression rather than in spite of it.
