This is the thing. How come here in the NE I'll get shack unless my restaurant is either a place is either some exotic Cambodian family restaurant or some master chef's place in Manhattan? This si the kind of the snobbery I'm talking about. People have to prove their all so "classy" and "exquisite".
It's not about being classy (with maybe the exception of NYC). Lobstering along the coast of New England is a way of life for many people, and for all practical purposes, an iconic way of life for most New Englanders. To eat at a place like Red Lobster in New England would be the equivalent of giving the middle finger to all those men and women who endure a culture that is so deep rooted that it does not make much sense to those that to do not live here. Kind of like the South. It's a regional thing. It's a cultural thing. It's like going to Italy and passing up all of the local restaurants to eat at Pizza Hut; or living in Nashville and thinking that a country band from New York City is the best thing to happen to country music; or going to McDonalds for a lobster roll. It's blasphemy.
Now, what you do have, and what I cannot get here, is the lobster roll. I really want a lobster roll sometimes, and when I ask about them, I usually get blank stares, nobody here knows what the hell I'm talking about.
A lobster roll in Chicago would be pretty darn expensive, but money well spent.
It's not snobbery at all. I'd rather go to a roadside clam shack and pay $10 for a pot of steamers, sit and eat them on a wooden bench than go to Red Lobster and shell out $16.99 for a few frozen shrimp on a bed of linguini.

THIS I do understand, I get where you're coming from. I won't go to Texas and order barbecue ribs at IHOP. Here in Maryland we have crabs but not lobsters. But Outback Steakhouse actually has locations in Sydney, and Taco Bell is trying to go to Mexico the second time after they failed the first time in the 80s.
Thanks everyone for clarifying the red lobster issue to Terp. If I was somewhere where the only options where a ridiculously fancy place or Red Lobster (basically anywhere not in the northeast) I probably just wouldn't get lobster.
Luckily we have places like "Red's lobster roll" which I am definitely gunna have to check out this summer.
