Is being Mid Western synonymous with being Northern?

I don't consider people from Missouri or Kansas to be northerners.

Kansas is very much northern. Missouri less so.

Yes, though some of the border cities definitely have a Southern flavor.

Kansas is quintessential southern mid-northern western midwest, hands down.

Interesting sentiment. Kansas is much more conservative than Missouri.

Most states I'd consider northern, with some mixing along the southernmost states' southern periphery.

Oh. My. God.

How often does this need to be brought up?

The Midwest is THE MIDWEST. And if you want to be technical, it is exclusively northern.

If you want to be less technical, it is a matter of perspective. I'm from Minneapolis....people from Iowa seem "Southern" to me.

But the Midwest is not some spawn-region of either the Northeast or the South. Lots of places in the Midwest actually *predate* many places in the South, in terms of their development.

The Midwest is its OWN THING, people. It's OWN THING.

Yeah, the Midwest is "The North," because it's obviously not "The South," but here is the thing:

The "North / South" distinction I think means a lot more to Southerners than it does to Northerners.

Northerners don't think of themselves as Northerners....they think of themselves as "Midwesterners," or as from "the East Coast," or as "New Englanders," etc.

The "Northerner" label is sort of a catch-all identity applied to people from "The North" by people that are not from "The North." Therefore, it's kind of arbitrary.

This is probably because there is waaaaay more cultural homogeneity between the Southern states than there is between the "Northern" states (Sorry, not sorry.)

So is North Dakota... what does that have to do with the north or south?
