Currently I'm in the DC metro area, but I'm probably going to have to drive a long distance for this since all the best ghost towns are further west. I'm planning a short film shot in a location that looks like a wasteland ravaged by nuclear war; it's sort of a futuristic Western (think Mad Max or Firefly) so the more bizarre and alien the landscape, the better.

I'm talking, overgrown farmland with rusted machinery, abandoned highways, big vacant buildings like shopping malls or movie theaters (preferably with no tweekers).

Also, I don't want to run into trouble with the local authorities, so it'd be ideal if we'd be able to get permission from the proper outlets to film there first if the land is privately owned. And since we're students and this will be shot on a low budget we're not able to pay a lot to be able to use a site. We will be very respectful and clean up after ourselves.

I'm open to hearing any and all suggestions!

I would suggest the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans (still looks apocalyptic 11 years on) or any number of neighborhoods in inner city Detroit.

Centralia, PA is another good candidate.

Cairo, IL as well.

Cairo, IL as well.

A Trip to Cairo, Illinois - Abandoned

These are all good suggestions! I've been to Centralia before, and did consider it. The graffiti all along Rt 61 is very striking for a shoot, and it's an interesting place.

Detroit fascinates me... but I'm a bit wary of what I might run into if I go skulking around the abandoned sites. In my own experience exploring abandoned places, most squatters are fine if you give them a few cigarettes, but I've never been to inner-city Detroit before so I have no idea what to expect.

Definitely going to read more about the Lower Ninth Ward and Cairo.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Largest ghost town in the US, 110 structures still standing, and an abandoned mine:

Bodie, CA

It's a California State Park:http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509

I did a Google search: ghost stories, Eastern Panhandle of WV and civil war

One notable link:
8 Ghost Stories From Harpers Ferry

As Halloween is upcoming, I think it would be interesting to go on a ghost tour.

You could also try Gettysburg (Pa) and in Virginia's Bull Run/Manassas.
Also Burkittsville (Md) "Blair Witch" and Frederick, Md.

I've heard of Bodie, you can't access it from Nov to March though, due to winter closure of the road that goes there
