For me I would say 3/4 hours. I find that after 5 hours of driving I find myself not wanting to do anything but rest, which is very inconvenient when you have limited time to enjoy your destination.
The most extreme trip I ever did was driving from DC to Bar Harbor, ME and back in 4 days. It was a 15-hour drive to Maine and a 20-hour drive back to DC because of traffic in the NYC region. As much as I enjoyed Maine, most of my memories from that trip are about traffic and driving.
Weekend trips aren't worth it, that's not enough to time to go far enough from home to where I actually feel like I've went somewhere. If I can't spend at least 4 or 5 days I don't even bother.
I'd say 6-mostly because I grew up taking weekend trips (and still do) to Boston every year to visit family.

My "family rule" is you must spend more time at your destination than the time it takes to travel both ways. Haha
So If we leave after work/school (maybe go in early to work to leave a little "early", before Rush Hours). Want to get there before it to late, have full day Saturday, and Full day Sunday, Heading back home around 7p to be home by 11p or Midnight.
I keep it to 2-1/2 hours tops. Within that timing, I can reach NYC, DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, Valley Forge, quaint resorts such as Cape May and Rehoboth Beach, Maryland's Eastern Shore, the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, the Pocono Mountains, Brandywine Valley, Lancaster Amish country, rolling countryside populated with covered bridges, etc. Even better, I can reach NYC, DC and Baltimore via train every hour if I want to ditch the car.
I live 6 hours from Chicago, with the time difference you get there in 5 hours. For me that's a very doable trip and well worth it. Besides the traffic once you get to Chicago it is an extremely easy drive.
If it's a regular two day weekend, the max we'd usually do is 4-5 hours. That usually means a trip to Sheridan or Buffalo, WY to play in the Bighorns, or meeting friends in Sioux Falls. If we have at least three days, we'd go up to 6 hours and over to Cody, WY.
