This one is in Lincoln Park, one of the most famous, and affluent neighborhoods in the city. Super walkable, and home to the best public schools in the city. Every school is between an 8 and 10 on Great Schools.

Burbs:

Oak Park is an urban, first ring suburb that's served by two CTA train lines...not the commuter rail, but the EL. School district is ranked 9/10 on Great Schools.
That house in Lincoln Park is a steal. The third bedroom is small, but usable. Only downside is ground floor windows, but I'd make do.

It varies a lot from neighborhood to neighborhood.

My hood, Germantown (Philadelphia) is very undervalued and has some beautiful and huge grand homes.

7 Bedrooms, 6 Full Baths, 5800 SqFt $423,000

5 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, 5800 SqFt $529,000

Mount Airy, the bordering neighborhood, is a little more pricy-but still some beautiful homes to be had:

How about the Historic Cliveden Mansion, where the Revolutionary War Battle of Germantown took place?

7 Bedrooms 6,700 SqFt $500,000

$425,000

$479,000

$549,000

$687,000

$769,000

Just for fun because this mansion is ridiculous at 9,000 square feet and $2.5 Million:

That's a lovely home, on an amazing piece of land, but google maps puts that 40-55 minutes from downtown, at 2pm. I'd have to imagine it's more than an hour from downtown at rush hour.

That's absolutely not true. Don't take me wrong, I'm sure that's what google said. But I live 5 minutes from this property and I drive that route at least 2-3 times weekly at various times, including 1-4 pm. Unless there's an accident, you definitely can do it in 30-35 minutes. The google estimate is dead wrong. Rush hour at 5-6 will be about 40-55-/+ coming from Charlotte. It rarely ever takes me an hour or more to get back home from DT Charlotte at the height of rush hour unless there's an accident........Great thread. Interesting seeing what $500K gets you in different areas of the country.
