Some other college towns in WA are...

Public Colleges
Bellingham (Western WA University)
Ellensburg (Central WA University)
Cheney (not far from Spokane) (Eastern WA University)
Olympia (Evergreen State College)

Private Colleges
Walla Walla (Whitman College, Walla Walla University)

Also another cool thing about Pullman is that it's not far from Moscow, ID which has University of Idaho, and Lewiston, ID which has Lewis-Clark State College.

The Pullman-Moscow dynamic is really unique and cool but they are pretty isolated. It's about an hour and a half to Spokane for the larger town though.

If you're truly an academic you know you're going to have to go wherever you get a job. Unless you're in a field with an unusually high demand for profs. What is your field?

I'm not sure how it works in your particular degree field, but I've known many people who've gone the academic route (including my brother). You generally don't pick the town then apply for jobs, you apply for the jobs and hope to god that you get accepted at one which is in a town you can live with.
