I'm bored right now...
What is a city that you can't walk through for 30 seconds without hearing a siren? New York and Chicago will obviously have the most due to density and numbers of total crimes, so other than those two...

Obviously the biggest and most dangerous cities. So cities that are both big and dangerous probably have the most: Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, St. Louis, Philadelphia.

Default what's even worse than sirens?

The ubiquitous "beeping" noises associated with vehicles backing up.

Construction vehicles, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, etc.

Supposedly they're for safety, but I'll bet the more likely effect is driving most city-dwellers bananas.

I've gone days without hearing sirens in Omaha, Denver, Minneapolis, SLC, and Des Moines. I can go a week without hearing one here in Rapid City.

I constantly heard sirens (and worse, those wretched auto alarms) in Denver. Also police helicopters.
Maybe this was because we lived right in the heart of the city, fairly high density.
I even hear the occasional siren where I am now, in a town of 10,000.

Every major city will have sirens droning all the time, just a fact of life. Whether it be crime victims, accident victims, health problems, etc, sirens are where people are, and the more people, the more sirens.

Not all sirens are police cars heading to a shooting. Interesting though I tend to become oblivious to the sirens.

St. Louis also has warning sirens situated throughout the area. They say they are for tornado warnings but were put up during the cold war days. Once a month it feels like I'm living in 1942 London. I don't think people realize we live in a very militaristic country.

Well, they probably were put up as part of the civil defense push of the 50's...but now they're really not for that any more. They are for tornado warnings...it's not a conspiracy. They test them once a month so that they'll be sure to work when the big one barrels down on the city.
