There's clearly a difference between what locals hear and the popular image among people elsewhere. Terms like "East Coast formality" are obviously referring to the big-city Northeast.

Jacksonville is closer to the east coast than Philly. Philly is considered an east coast city and Jacksonville isn't.

I think it seems people far from the East Coast tend to consider only certain locations or big cities in the Northeast to be "east coast" while people from the East Coast consider it Maine to Florida-because it is.
"I-95" This is the major highway of the East Coast and people are driving up and down it constantly.
Some people really need some geography lessons.....
