Well that is my point. I think I will go by what geographers think of the East Coast rather then by what someone in my neighborhood thinks!
Anyway, like I said there maybe a historical reason why people out West have the mistaken impression that the East Coast is just the Northeast (the Northeast used to be far more populated than the Southeast). But that was wrong even then and it makes even less sense now.
When my post title said "people" I was not talking about geographers. I was talking about the general public. I would have said geographers if i meant geographers. Specifying "referring to" should also have been a strong clue.
Furthermore. Why would I have to ask what the east coast was if I meant it literally? I could have just brought up google maps and looked. I know what a coast is and what direction east is.
"East Coast" is really Maine to Miami-not sure why so many try to cut it short while the "West Coast" seems to almost always be considered the whole of Washington, Oregon and California.
Actually I've heard "West Coast" applied to just California while "Pacific Northwest" is a more specific term applied to OR (Portland) and WA (Seattle).
"East Coast" is literally everything from Florida to Maine, but the term typically refers to the Bos-Wash corridor. If we were literally about all of these geo-cultural designations, then we'd have to consider LA and Phoenix "Southern"--which no one does.
From a Texan, east coast to me is everything from DC up to Maine. Everything else is south. That includes Charleston and Atlanta. Those are southern cities.
Next time the Weather Channel says "okay, east coast, time to be on alert. Tropical Storm Jennie is really brewing in the Caribbean", I guess I can change the channel, since the east coast doesnt exist below the Potomac.

Meteorologist usually say Eastern Seaboard.
