The only states I haven't been to are Alaska, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky - since I live in Oregon, that means I have been to the states that border my state and the states that border those states and the states that border those states (well, except Nebraska)

I live in Ohio and have been to them all, but only driven through the WV panhandle on I-70 to get to Pennsylvania.

Lived 16 years in Northern California and never went to Oregon, though I did fly over it to Washington (as well as visiting NV & AZ).

I live in Missouri and I have travelled across all of its border states. Missouri actually has the highest number of border states in the country (eight): Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.

If I had to guess, I would think it probably came about because the original border was defined by the Delaware River, and that the course of the river has changed since then. I may be wrong on that, though.
The big one--as well as a couple of small ones--is river dredge. Here's one:

Well to be fair, you are less likely to be shot driving to NM, OK or Arkansas.

... Jury's out on Louisiana though.
