Hello, I am a single female that is training to become a teacher and I'm currently living in Plantation,FL, but I want to move to a more walking friendly community.
I don't drive so I want to live where everything is within walking distance like the European style small towns.
I am not a fan of the cold if it lasts longer than a month, by cold I mean snow and ice (I'm okay with it being a bit chilly).
I also prefer to live in a coastal state, I don't have to live on the water/beach though and its not a must.
I love cities with history, but it's not a must.
And I don't mind living in a small 1 bedroom apartment, I would prefer a 2 bedroom though so I can use the extra as an office.
My budget is on the lower end, around $800 - $1200, but the lower the better.
To sum things up, I want to find a warmer coastal city with some history where I can get all my essentials (food, movies, stores, schools) within walking distance. I don't mind a small place as long as it's around my budget.
Just for reference, I love Boulder,CO; Washington,DC; Boston;MA; and Hoboken,NJ but I haven't been during the winter to the last three and Boulder gets too cold for me as well as it not being coastal.
Check out Savannah GA. You can find a decent selection of two bedroom apartments around $1200, and if you can deal with one bedroom around $850-$900 in the Victorian District near Forsyth Park, in the heart of Historic Savannah. There's a fairly new Kroger grocery store/pharmacy there along with pretty much everything else you would need within walking distance.
Savannah was my first thought as well. You might be able to find what you want in parts of New Orleans as well.
I do have to say though, I'm not sure how teaching really integrates well with no car. Not driving will really restrict your job opportunities to not only urban schools, but to urban schools which either happen to be within walking distance, or are accessible by transit.
Perhaps a place on the small side that may work is Georgetown SC, but not sure about apartments.
