Are street cats a major issue in most cities in US?
At night, I never saw too many in San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston, Austin, Montreal, Philly, Washington DC. Maybe I just did not see them.
NYC has lots of them. I always see them. Where are they all coming from? Do not people just not neuter their pets or something? It should be made a law.
Cats tend to roam at night- there are a lot in Portland, where there are quiet neighborhoods and everyone lets their cats out to roam (I have even seen them napping on the street or sidewalk in the daytime!). These are owned cats not strays.
Other places- like SF not so much, people tend to keep their cats indoors or the houses aren't set up to have easily accessible back yards for the cats to go in and out of...
People feed them. Some people will trap them and have them neutered/spayed and then release them again.
For cities close enough to the wild, so there are coyotes or other predators like owls, they become dinner.
Even in Davis, CA, where I used to live, there were large owls that would feast on outdoor cats.
I wish people wouldn't feed them and perpetuate the fleas and diseases they carry. I'm not the bleeding heart type, though. I think for many who have had property with pests that others call pets, you learn to get over killing them for the sake of your home. Like mice and squirrels that move into your walls and attic, etc.
I think it might depend on the neighborhood. I see several strays everyday on a specific block/apartment complex in Columbus. Besides that I haven't see any in the city. Like another poster said a large factor is food source/if people feed them.
Cats are nocturnal. They are an absolute pleasure to have around because they take care of the pest problems. Our neighborhood traps them, sterilizes them, and puts them back in their colonies.
We have pet cats. We don't let them outside. If you have pet cats, you shouldn't let them outside. Otherwise, you have people like NoMoreSnowforMe who will kill them on a whim.

Yes, I hunt stray cats and murder them by night. Personally.
No wait, that's the coyotes and owls I mentioned...
Sterilize them and let them back out to spread their fleas and diseases, though, so that people who actually take care of their own pets can bear the cost of the vet bills and lose their own pets to diseases and heartworms, etc. How noble.
