You mean the part where the OP asks folks to share their experiences and you failed to do that for the Carolinas (and it sounds like you have little to no experience actually living there), instead just stating "the South doesn't appeal to me whatsoever"?

I don't know OP's age but he apparently has a resume and work history and enough $$ to tour the Pacific. Based on his post, I think New Mexico is worth serious consideration. It is definitely "laid back" and nearly paradise for climate unless you like heat and humidity, tornadoes/hurricanes and frequent blizzards. The economy here was dependent on Federal dollars but that has largely dried up. You can see it even in the National forests and parks as well as in government contracts. The private sector is not filling the void very quickly. State government has a less than stellar history of promoting the economy...mixed at best. Apparently jobs trump scenery, climate and recreational opportunities...who knew? (Somebody tell the Governor.)

If the OP likes a challenge in workforce and economic development, this is the place. Retirees are descending upon New Mexico and that brings a growing need for elder-services. Tech and web firms, like Facebook, are coming to the state but others, like Intel, seem to be fading away. Out-migration of our trained and educated workforce is a serious issue. The cost of living is low, cultural diversity and quality of life are high, recreational opportunities abound. There are only two million people in the state so it gets overlooked unless we make a lot of noise.
