In the summer I'd recommend Northern Michigan. I admit I'm biased because it's my home state, but it has beautiful shoreline along the Great Lakes as well as tons of smaller inland lakes. Petoskey, Traverse City, and Charlevoix are all beautiful towns. Go farther north and there are some gorgeous places in the Upper Peninsula, Pictured Rock being one fo the best.
