I'm not a New Yorker, but I follow local politics, and Cuomo is pretty much hated by the progressive left in the state, which is why he faced a Democratic primary challenge in 2014. Partially this is because of his stances on issues - he might be a social liberal, but he's economically conservative on some issues. But mostly this is because he is seen as supporting the status quo of a Republican-dominated State Senate because it provides him cover not to pass progressive policies which he personally opposes.

I would have to agree that WNY is very touristy. I was surprised at how many Cleveland shirts I saw in WNY last summer. Tourism is probably the only thing saving the economy in WNY. It would be dead otherwise BECAUSE of NYC.
What is NYC doing to ruin Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse's economy? What would and upstate NY government done differently?

I think social issues are more of a compass for that and I'm a liberal. People can agree to disagree about economics, but social issues are more of a divider in my opinion.
my vote (since I live in upstate NY) is I can't imagine a bigger divide anywhere between conservative people in upstate vs. the uber liberal progressives in the city.
I live in upstate and absolutely loathe downstate. It's the single reason NY has been mired in ridiclious taxes, regulations, fees and crony capitalism. Upstate NY has been suffering from recession for a very long time while we are all expected to bow down and do as the city tells us. I want to leave NY just because the downstate politicians have ruined this beautiful state and made it very difficult to live and operate a business here.
Its terrible.
NY needs to divorce itself and make 2 separate states.

All that aside I am also exhausted of being associated with NYC by every person outside of NY I meet when traveling.
That city is a heavy weight and it just crushes any other culture in this state. Outsider perception of NY is painfully flawed.
