Yeah, I see tons of TX plates nowadays in IL. The non-bordering states I see the most are PA, OH, MI, MN, TN, FL, NY, GA, VA, and CT. A decent amount of CO and WA plates more recently too.
States I see the least of in IL: KS, KY, NE, ND, SD, UT, AR, OR, AL, NJ, SC, LA, and NM
The rental car thing is also something to be aware of. The cleaner, newer model year cars with out of state plates, there's a good chance those are just rentals.
Yes, you can tell a rental car apart from others as they are usually new, clean and have no dealer sticker or affiliation plastered on them. Sometimes you can even see the rental agency sticker in side or back of car. I guess traveling by car for work has made me notice these things that others probably never bat an eye at.
Now living in TN, most common out of state plates I see include Florida, Texas, Ohio, Illinois.
Most common bordering states include Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky.
Hardly ever see Indiana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina considering how close those states are to TN.
Probably OH and KY. WV has a ton too during this time of year as the Charleston beaches are the closest for many people in those 3 states.
Not as many FLs as you would think. I have seen almost every state at one time or another. A surprising amount of MS. You don’t see a lot of Alabama tags.
Also a very large amount of TN tags. And with the county tags, not just the major cities. The East TN counties which are on I-26 (which directly connects to Charleston) are popular.
We see British Columbia plates all day long here, because we're 20 miles from the Canadian border. We also see a decent amount of OR plates, followed by AK, MT, HI, CA and ID. The most surprising are probably AK and HI, but we have a big connection with Hawaii and even stronger one with AK- Bellingham is the southern terminus for the Alaskan Ferry, so it makes sense.
Some posters are forgetting that the OP said plates from states N-O-T bordering your state. Just a friendly reminder
