The train track is touching the corner of my property, less than 1000 feet from the house. The track (there used to be 2 tracks) is fairly steep as tracks go, so I certainly hear the trains, especially when they are going uphill. I heard a tornado once; it sounded similar to a train.

The vehicle traffic has greatly increased since 1988. Instead of black angus cows, there is an allotment across the street. The trucks that visit the brine well make a bit of noise, especially when they are using the jake brake. At $150 a month, I put up with that.

There are fewer gunshots now. I do not do much shooting anymore, and have greatly restricted who gets permission to hunt on my property.

I used to have problems with dogs barking, but the last of my dogs died in 2012.

I live in an area that bustles during the day because I am a couple blocks off Rt. 66 right next to a large University, but there are also plenty of birds, in part thanks to my birdfeeder, and crickets at night.

Occasionally I hear the psychotic screams of an insane homeless person or the giggles and laughs of drunk college students walking home.

Also a lot of wind in the treetops this time of year and in late summer there is also a fair bit of thunder.

Cars on the highway (we are about 500 ft in from a 55mph 4 lane divided highway). Crows. Dogs. Kids playing. Owls. Occasional airplane.

Also HS band and football games. We back up to a lake and on the other side of the lake is the HS. Major football powerhouse. We hear band practice after school and during the games in my back yard we can hear the announcer.

4th of July - fireworks. They shoot them off over that same lake behind the house.

Coyotes, owls and tree frogs at night. Mourning doves, crows, hummingbirds, bees in the day. Occasionally a loudspeaker announcement or crowds cheering from the school. Distant freeway droning.

Not much in the winter, when it gets warmer the neighbor's lawn equipment, mower, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, etc. occasional sirens from the Police/Fire departments down the street, owls, birds, squirrels. Douchecanoe dudebros with a fart can on their Honda Civics, the neighborhood inbred's Harley, domestic disturbances at the white trash apartment complex.

I live in a townhome community and am set back from the road. Mostly all I hear is the waterfall under my front deck. Very peaceful when going to sleep.

As opposed to this.....

Used to hear cows but that's changed as many of the nearby farms have been sold to developers. All I hear these days are bugs in the nature preserve behind the house, planes flying into/out of Tampa (although I'm far enough away that they're pretty high up when passing overhead), and the neighborhood flock of Sandhill Cranes.

Cars...not so much at night, but in the morning and late afternoon, as people going to/from work use the road behind our house. Sometimes police or military helicopters (coming from Camp Pendleton). Other than that, right at this moment I am hearing crickets and a robin. My favorite sound is mockingbirds, but I haven't heard them this year yet.

Occasional cars, chickens, ducks and cows, dogs barking (usually mine). We also have a local murder of crows that make quite a bit of noise especially when hawks are around.

I live in a rural area our nearest town has 1,200 year round residents.
